By Kendra Howard at kendra@blamovement.org or call 645.216.2963 | November 6, 2024
During this election season, BAG has the opportunity to support various organizations to educate and inform our communities about the issues that matter to us and share stories of the importance of civic engagement, exercising our freedoms, and working together for lasting change. We’re proud of our partnership with the Black Liberation Alliance Movement (BLAM) and Co-Founder Kendra Copeland-Howard shared the mission and vision of BLAM and how BAG supported their efforts. The responses were edited for length and clarity.
What is the mission and goals of your organization?
Our mission at the Black Liberation Alliance Movement (BLAM) is to empower Black communities through education, advocacy, and grassroots organizing. We are dedicated to dismantling systemic injustices, promoting civic engagement, and fostering a society rooted in equity, freedom, and justice. By elevating political awareness, cultivating social consciousness, and building coalitions, we work to create lasting change and a liberated future for all.
How did you hear about BAG? What was the event(s) or nature of the partnership?
We learned about the BAG initiative through a friend and colleague Nubian Roberts. This partnership aligns well with our mission to promote civic engagement and voter turnout in South Florida. We aim to encourage Floridians to participate fully by being informed voters.
What did BAG contribute to help with your organization?
BAG assisted with both funding and peer support from BAG Coordinator, Danielle Adams. As BLAM continues to make connections and educate voters in the faith-based community, we extended BAG’s reach to the faith-based community in Miami-Dade by expanding our canvassing team and broadening our outreach efforts through social media and additional printed materials.
How did the partnership help to meet your organization’s goals?
The partnership has been instrumental in advancing our goals, especially in promoting civic engagement and building community alliances. Through this collaboration, we were able to broaden our outreach and connect with others who share our commitment to the community.
How did you create your organization? What is one thing you’d want our community to know about your organization?
The Black Liberation Alliance Movement (BLAM) was founded out of a shared commitment to social justice and community activism. Both James and I come from families where these values are deeply rooted. As a married couple, we’ve been working in community spaces together for over four years. With my background in social work and our collective experiences, with other organizations we realized—along with encouragement from a few others—that we had a vision to address critical gaps and issues within our community. That vision became the foundation of BLAM.
We want our community to know that we are here to stay—because Florida is ours! We are dedicated to building a stronger, informed, more just community, and we’re committed for the long haul to making positive, lasting change across the state.
Would you partner again with BAG in the future?
Yes, we would gladly partner with BAG again. Our experience with them has been very positive, even in this short time. The peer support from BAG Coordinator Danielle Adams has been invaluable, she has also connected us with other community members, that will allow us to build partnerships as we work together towards helping our community be better informed and empowered.
How can folks support your organization?
People can get involved with BLAM in several ways. We welcome volunteers to join our initiatives, and we’re always open to partnership opportunities with like-minded organizations. People can also support us by following and sharing our content on social media. Lastly, donations are always appreciated to help fund our community-driven programs and advocacy efforts.
