What is Project 2025?
In simplest terms it’s a 900+ page document created by conservative think tank, The Heritage Foundation, that calls for sweeping changes to the federal government including expanding the powers of the President, firing thousands of civil servants, ban abortion nationwide, undermine LGBTQ+ rights, and dismantling the Department of Education. Basically, it’s a conservative extremist agenda designed as a proposed blueprint for the next Republican administration. And even though Trump keeps claiming that he has no idea who is behind it, six of his former Cabinet members and at least 140 people who worked in his administration had a hand in crafting it.
Vice President and presidential nominee Kamala Harris called it a plan to return America to a dark past and has vowed during her campaign to defeat Project 2025.
Why should I care?
Because it’s pretty terrifying. The goals of Project 2025, if implemented, would be devastating to all of us, especially black people, communities of color, and the LGBTQ+ community. And for us in Florida, we’ve already experienced Project 2025’s most extreme proposals under Governor Ron DeSantis, who has eliminated abortion access, rolled back action on climate change, and enacted policies that only benefit the wealthy and well-connected corporate elites. As the Tampa Bay Times notes, “The 900-page agenda doesn’t lay out federal proposals that would specifically target Florida. Instead, in numerous instances, it proposes the opposite: Florida laws that have passed that the authors want to see enacted federally… The Sunshine State is mentioned by name about a dozen times in the document.”
